MasterChef's Gary Rhodes dies, aged 59

Celebrity chef Gary Rhodes has passed away, aged 59.

The chef, who appeared on shows such as MasterChef, Rhodes Around Britain, MasterChef USA and Hell's Kitchen, passed away on Tuesday evening (November 26) in Dubai, according to his family.

"The Rhodes family are deeply saddened to announce the passing of beloved husband, father and brother, Gary Rhodes OBE," they said in a statement.

"Gary passed away last evening, Tuesday 26th November 2019, at the age of 59, with his beloved wife Jennie by his side. The family would like to thank everyone for their support and ask for privacy during this time."

Born in London, Rhodes made his first television appearance aged 27, and opened his first restaurant in the late 1990s. He was made an OBE in 2006, and moved to Dubai in 2011 where he ran two restaurants.

As well as fronting a number of cookery programmes, the chef also appeared in the sixth series of Strictly Come Dancing in 2008, and was partnered with Karen Hardy.

Since the news broke of Rhodes' death, tributes have poured in for the chef, with Gordon Ramsay tweeting: "We lost a fantastic chef today in Gary Rhodes. He was a chef who put British Cuisine on the map. Sending all the love and prayers to your wife and kids. You’ll be missed Gx."

Former Great British Bake Off winner Candice Brown added: "So so sad to hear about Gary Rhodes. His banana and syrup loaf was the first thing I baked all on my own. The pages are stuck together with syrup. So much love to his family."
