Matt Damon and his family ended up stranded in Ireland after production on his film The Last Duel shut down in early March and travel restrictions were set into place.

The star, who has been seen out and about in Dalkey with his family, previously called the Irish stay a “fairy tale” - though a neighbourhood bakery has revealed Damon is now on his way back to the States.

In a photo shared by Dalkey bakery Country Bake on Facebook, Damon was photographed in the store wearing a baseball cap and hoodie.

It captioned the picture, “Our last visit from Matt and his family for a while. Safe travels!”

“Thanks for bringing some excitement to Dalkey during this pandemic!” it continued.

It emerged that Damon and his family were self-isolating in Dalkey after his Ridley Scott-helmed film ground to a halt amidst coronavirus restrictions.

Damon, who is with his wife Luciana Barroso and their four children, was seen with locals before social distancing kicked in - taking pictures with fans and visiting restaurants.

He was also seen out for a swim at local landmark The Forty Foot around the same time, carrying a plastic bag from an Irish grocery chain called SuperValu IRL - which delighted fans on social media. One wrote on Twitter, “imagine going into Supervalu and there’s Matt Damon doin [sic] the big shop.”

After much speculation, he later revealed the bag was full of “towels to dry off with.”

After stricter restrictions were introduced, Damon gave an interview with local radio station Spin 1038 - in which he revealed his daughter had contracted COVID-19 while at college in New York. Calling Dalkey “one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever been”, he added it was “like a fairytale here.”

Damon was also very impressed with the Irish premier Leo Varadkar, who he said was “just on another level” and “bad a**”.

“Obviously what’s going on in the world is horrible, but I’m with my whole family, I’ve got my kids,” he said.

Damon also revealed that as he was initially set to be filming for eight weeks and his children would have missed school, they had made provisions for teachers to be with them even before the pandemic broke out.

He said, “We’ve got what nobody else has, which is actual live human beings teaching our kids. All the schools are all shut down back home and all the kids are doing remote learning, and so we feel guilty we’ve got this kind of incredible set up in this place, which is just absolutely gorgeous.”
