Forget Blur vs Oasis or North Korea vs Seth Rogen – the most entertaining feud of the 21st century has to be Matt Damon vs Jimmy Kimmel.
What started as a silly gag has spiraled into something rather beautiful and arguably saved Kimmel's late night career. But what's it all about? Here's your handy guide to the history of The Great Damon And Kimmel Beef.
1. THE CLOSING GAG
We'll let Jimmy explain the origins of the gag via this NPR interview:
"We had a bad show. The guests were bad, and I was feeling pretty bad about myself at the end of the program. And I decided to say, for the amusement of one of our producers who was standing next to me: 'I want to apologise to Matt Damon. We ran out of time.' And he got a kick out of it, the producer, so I just started doing it every night to amuse him.
"Matt Damon was just the first name that popped into my head. I was trying to think of an A-list star, and somebody we absolutely would not bump if he was on the show. The legs on this bit are unbelievable to me. I mean, people laugh every time I say it. Repeating the same joke every single night, you'd think eventually people would get tired of it, but they don't."
Here's a compilation of Jimmy's long-running gag that started it all, including when Damon finally made it to the show - only to supposedly run out of time:
2. THE BOURNE TREACHERY
Jimmy stepped things up a notch by attempting to bump Matt from his own movie, The Bourne Ultimatum, by having him replaced by sidekick Guillermo.
3. I'M F**KING MATT DAMON
Matt had enough by 2008, and teamed up with Jimmy's then-girlfriend Sarah Silverman for this viral classic - one of the all-time great talk-show moments and possibly the funniest comedy song ever to feature a celebrity.
4. I'M F**KING BEN AFFLECK
Consider the feud ON. Jimmy didn't stand for this, and so responded in 2009 with this epic comeback video – featuring Matt's bestie Ben and many of their famous friends including Brad Pitt, Robin Williams and Harrison Ford. Incredible.
5. HANDSOME MEN'S CLUB EVICTION
This sketch was already amazing, but it had the ultimate payoff when it is revealed just who is the mastermind behind Jimmy's expulsion from the club:
6. MOVIE: THE MOVIE SNUB
In this post-Oscars skit in 2012, Jimmy assembled pretty much every Hollywood star - even Jeff Goldblum - before bumping Matt yet again, but not before making him dress up as a load of sour grapes.
7. MATT GETS HIS REVENGE
In this 2013 special, Matt completely hijacked the show by tying up his nemesis and taking over hosting duties, and Robin Williams was back to help him out.
During the show, it turned out that Jimmy had actually auditioned for every Matt Damon role ever:
Of course, Sarah Silverman arrived to make things even more awkward:
8. MOVIE: THE MOVIE PART 2
You'd think Matt wouldn't fall for this again, but here he was filmed filming 'revolutionary motion-capture' footage in which he 'eats a sandwich' (wink-wink).
9. GUILLERMO CRASHES MATT'S INTERVIEW
Screw Elysium, we want to hear about Guillermo's new movies Estupido and Ass-Face.
10. MEAN TWEETS GO TOO FAR
Jimmy's regular 'Mean Tweets' feature took an unexpected twist when Matt dropped by:
11. THE MONUMENTS MEN (MINUS MATT)
When the all-star cast of Matt's latest movie dropped by, he wasn't good enough to get a spot on the couch. And just when he had his chance, a fire broke out.
12. LOCKER ROOM GUY BURN
In this brief little skit, Jimmy couldn't resist the chance to throw in a quick diss of Matt being lonely and rubbish - and this time John Krasinski joined in.
13. MATT GETS LAMPED
In yet another post-Oscars special, Jimmy shows off his unique acting school - including Matt 'Damen' being turned into a chair, and then having to portray a lamp.
14. COUPLES COUNSELLING
It had to happen eventually. After years of squabbles and betrayals, the couple decided it was finally time to seek help. But did it work? Well, no:
15. A CHARITABLE FEUD
Matt and Jimmy managed to put their feud to good use in 2015, as Matt offered fans to 'wait' with him in the green room during Jimmy's show in order to raise funds for (RED).
16. BEN AFFLECK SNEAKS MATT ON
Showing just how strong the new Batman is, Ben managed to carry on his mate in an attempt for Matt and Jimmy to finally bury the hatchet.
17. MORE COUPLES COUNSELLING
It turns out that you need more that one counselling session per year to have any hope of fixing your problems. And a fort load of pillows.
18. MATT'S ANTI KIMMEL VP AD
With Jimmy attempting to run as the next Vice President of the US, Matt did the only thing he could do. Run an attack ad against him. He's pretty convincing.
19. MATT 'CONSOLES' JIMMY AT THE EMMYS
The feud went rather public at the 2016 Emmy Awards, when Matt nonchalantly appeared onstage to commiserate with host Jimmy after he lost out to John Oliver. Suffice to say, he didn't like them apples that much.
20. MATT SNEAKS IN AS TOM BRADY
OK, the Ben Affleck suit fooled nobody, but Matt managed to get on set by pretending to be Super Bowl hero Tom Brady in February 2017. A day after his team won the event, Matt took a victory lap all the way to Jimmy to make sure he rubbed it in fully.
21. IS MATT THE FATHER OF JIMMY'S WIFE'S BABY?
Shit just got real. Has Matt made the ultimate betrayal? Only Maury can settle this one.
22. MATT DAMON IS PLAYED OFF AS KIMMEL HOSTS THE OSCARS... AGAIN AND AGAIN
Turns out Matt isn't even safe at the Oscars as Kimmel reveals just how much Matt's career really means to him with a focus on We Bought a Zoo right before he joined Ben Affleck on stage to present the Best Original Screenplay award - and Matt couldn't get a word in edgeways.
23. MATT ENDORSES UNITED AIRLINES
On Jimmy Kimmel Live, Matt delivered a voiceover on a new United Airlines advert that referenced the incident that saw a passenger forcibly removed from one of their planes.
"We're United Airlines, we work hard to get you safely to your destination and that's why we…" he starts, before quickly going off script.
"I can't do this anymore because I know what it's like to get bumped. Trust me, I've been getting bumped from Jimmy's show for the last eight years and it takes a toll. We're people, damn it, and we deserve to be treated with dignity."
A United Airlines flight attendant is then heard telling Matt that they need his seat – "I'm doing the voiceover for your company, what do you mean, sir? I'm Matt Damon" – before sounds of a struggle and Jimmy takes over.
"Hi, I'm Jimmy Kimmel. Inviting you to come fly the friendly skies," he says while Matt is yelling "you people are animals" in the background.
