Matt Hancock has made a statement in the House of Commons on the B.1.617.2 coronavirus variant, first identified in India, and the rollout of the Covid vaccination programme. The health secretary said that the “new variant is not tending to penetrate into older, vaccinated groups”, and that the rate of vaccination has “quadrupled” in Bolton, following a sharp rise in cases in the town. Mr Hancock confirmed that people aged 37 and over will now be invited to come forward for the vaccine from Tuesday 18 May.
