Matt Healy's mum Denise Welch steals credit for The 1975's double Brit Award win: 'It's all down to me!'

Denise Welch has taken credit for the 1975’s double Brit Award win, despite not being in the band.

The four-piece scooped British Group and British Album for their number one, A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, at Tuesday night’s ceremony which also saw them perform their new single Sincerity is Scary.

Welch, whose son Matt Healy is the group’s frontman, cheekily took credit for their win as she remembered when they rehearsed in her garage.

She tweeted: “Speechless! Just crying thinking of them playing with their cheap drums and guitars in the garage!!! And obs it’s all down to me!!”

Welch was left shaking on hearing of the band’s double win, telling fans: “Just saw before I went on stage. I was visibly shaking I think!! So proud and how handsome do they look!! #THEBRITS.”

Healy, who performs alongside Ross MacDonald, George Daniel, Adam Hann, was praised for calling out misogyny in the music industry during his acceptance speech for British Group.
