The family of Matthew Perry, the beloved "Friends" actor, is "heartbroken" following his death.
His family shared a statement with People on Sunday, one day after law enforcement authorities found Perry at his home in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Times reported that Perry, 54, died from an apparent drowning.
"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother," the statement said. "Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend."
"You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love," the statement continued.
Perry was born to actor John Bennett Perry and writer Suzanne Morrison on August 19, 1969, according to Today. His mother remarried Dateline journalist Keith Morrison in 1981, and his dad married Debbie Boyle that same year, per People. Perry has five siblings, according to the outlet.
In his memoir, Perry referred to his father as his "hero," Today reports. He also described Morrison as "lovely," noting that Morrison held his family together.
During a 2022 interview with Diane Sawyer, Perry said his parents supported him through his decades-long addiction to alcohol and opioids. In 2018, when he was hospitalized after his colon burst, Perry said his parents remained at his bedside.
"They were both standing at the edge of my bed," Matthew told Sawyer. "I was like, 'Whoa, I must be really sick for this to be happening.'"
Law enforcement sources who spoke to the LA Times on the condition of anonymity due to the ongoing investigation did not cite a cause of death, and no drugs were found at the scene. The sources also told the outlet no foul play is suspected.
Several celebrities paid tribute to Perry after his death, including two of his "Friends" castmates. Fans began paying tribute to Perry outside the "Friends" apartment in New York City and sang the sitcom's theme song at Charlie Puth's concert in Australia on Sunday. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a former classmate of Perry's, also honored the late actor.
