Matthew Shevlin says it was a "tough decision but the right one" after penning a new three-year deal with Coleraine. The striker has ended speculation about his future by deciding to step away from his job outside of football and commit to the Bannsiders full-time.

The 25-year-old, who has been Coleraine's leading marksman over the past three seasons, said he is "excited" about the new era at The Showgrounds. Last week the club confirmed Dean Shiels was taking over as Head Coach with Oran Kearney moving to a Sporting Director role and Shevlin said he wanted to be a part of the club's journey going forward.

“It was a tough decision for me as it has meant stepping away from my full time job, but after discussing it with my girlfriend and family, I knew this was the right decision to make," said the striker. "I am really excited about what is happening at Coleraine and wanted to be part of it."

Shevlin has scored 68 times for Coleraine since joining from Linfield back in January 2021. Keeping him at The Showgrounds is a major boost for new boss Shiels, who praised the player for committing his future to the club.

“Matthew is of huge importance to the group. His teammates love to play with him because of how hard he works and is a nightmare for defenders to play against," said Shiels.

"I am absolutely delighted that he has committed to the club and I think that sets the precedent that this is the direction the club is going and Matthew is really keen in buying into what we are doing hear and hopefully that will ring out around the league and players who might want to come and join.”
