Matthew Wright went into panic mode on live telly earlier this week when he was repeatedly pranked by a foul-mouthed caller to The Wright Stuff.

The chat show presenter was in the middle of a lively debate on whether it's right for parents to smack their children, when he was besieged by a series of strange phone calls.

Apparently the show has been trying to weed out a particular prankster in recent weeks, but caller 'Gary' got through twice on Wednesday's show (January 11) to refer to an unknown woman as "a bitch" live on air.

"What we have with 'Gary', it's not his real name, he is a regular abuser of our phone," a frazzled Matthew complained as he ordered his phone screener to disconnect him.

"I can only apologise again for the language he used and if there was any offence caused. We are doing our very best to ensure this man does not get back on the line. He's cheated us again."

However, the presenter grew even more frenzied when this prankster again got through, and once again dropped the B-bomb, this time under the alias Tom from Buckinghamshire.

"There's a few people I'd like to smack today, including our previous caller," Wright vented.

The Wright Stuff, which got a significant format overhaul last year, has made headlines for bizarre live TV moments often in the past - including a lurid conversation about David Cameron's so-called 'piggate', and Matthew's ill-fated attempt to try out invisible pants live on air.

Channel 5 airs The Wright Stuff weekday mornings at 9.15am.
