Spurs were the closest challengers to eventual champions Leicester during the run-in but their challenge subsided over the final four games.
Tottenham collected only two points from those matches, allowing Arsenal to beat them to second place.
Pochettino’s men are seven points behind leaders Chelsea with nine games remaining, and travel to Swansea on Wednesday.
He admitted: “We talk a lot about last season. Football is about mentality and energy in your mind, not only in your body.
“In football it is important to learn from the good and bad experiences. It is about mentality, never giving up and concentrating until the end.
"We did not have a problem of physical condition but we switched off in our mind after Chelsea (where Spurs drew 2-2 on May 2, handing the title to Leicester).
“We lost our final two games against Southampton and Newcastle and lost second place to Arsenal.
"That was what happened last season so we need to learn.
"We can never give up and we must always fight, and concentrate to the end. Belief is the most important thing in football, along with faith and fight.”
