Mauricio Pochettino signs new Tottenham contract until 2023

Mauricio Pochettino has signed a new five-year contract at Tottenham, committing himself to the club until 2023.

It is a two-year extension on the five-year deal signed by Pochettino in May 2016, and his three assistants – Jesús Pérez, Miguel D’Agostino and Toni Jiménez – have also signed extensions to their contracts.

Speaking 11 days ago after the final match of the season against Leicester, Pochettino refused to confirm if he would definitely be at Spurs next season, after calling for the club's chairman Daniel Levy to "be brave and take risks" to help the club to win major honours.

Pochettino has held several meetings with Levy since, where he has called on the chairman to release significant transfer funds this summer and not to baulk at selling fan-favourites Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose and Mousa Dembele.

It is understood those meetings have gone well, leaving Pochettino assurred that he has the backing to the take the club to the next level. A host of key players including Christian Eriksen, Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min, Dele Alli and Jan Vertonghen are now expected to follow Pochettino by committing their long-term futures to the club.

The Argentinian has overseen impressive progress since joining Spurs from Southampton in 2014, guiding the club to three consecutive top-three finishes and the last-16 of the Champions League this season.

His work has not gone unnoticed and he is admired in the boardrooms at Spurs' top-six rivals Chelsea and Manchester United.

Pochettino said: "I am honoured to have signed a new long-term contract as we approach one of the most significant periods in the Club's history and be the manager that will lead this team into our new world-class stadium.

"This is just one of the factors that makes this one of the most exciting jobs in world football and we are already making plans to ensure we continue to build on the great work that everyone has contributed to over the past four years.

"Daniel and I have spoken at length about our aspirations for this football club. We both share the same philosophies to achieve long-term, sustainable success.

"This is a special club - we always strive to be creative in the way we work both on and off the pitch and will continue to stick to our principles in order to achieve the success this Club deserves."

Levy said: "I am delighted that we have agreed a new, extended contract with Mauricio. We have been on an extraordinary journey and the times ahead look even more exciting as the Club enters the next phase in its history. Mauricio has fostered an incredible spirit in the team and has embraced a style of play our fans have loved watching. I know they will welcome this commitment by Mauricio."

Many of the club's senior players, including Kane and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, feel their future is tied to Pochettino's.

"He's really important," Eriksen told Standard Sport a fortnight ago. "You can see what he's achieved with this club. When I arrived [in summer 2013], there was a season with a lot of ups and downs at first but ever since [Pochettino joined a year later] it's really been very stable – finishing in the top-three is a big achievement for the manager.

"He can have a big clap on his shoulders for the people around him and for him. He's pushed us and the players in the right direction. We're going into every game and winning games with the right mentality with exciting football. The fans in particular, I hope, enjoy how we play.

"I enjoy how we play under the manager. I think the style of play is something that suits me and suits the players we have. Generally you're going into every game with excitement. You know you're going to play forward and not going to defend. You're going to try to create and score goals.

"Everybody who follows the Premier League knows we have been consistent with the points we've got. Finishing three times in the top three means a lot and it's a big achievement compared to where the club was six years ago."
