Max Verstappen has revealed he received a text from Sebastian Vetel midway through his winning streak, telling the Dutchman he will go on to break the record.
Saturday of the Dutch Grand Prix may well be the last time in 3,562 days that Vettel remains the sole holder of the record for most wins in a row.
Should Verstappen be victorious in Zandvoort, a task made easier from his pole position, he will draw level with his Red Bull predecessor.
Sebastian Vettel backs Max Verstappen to break record
While some sportspeople would prefer to see their record stay intact, it comes as little surprise to learn Vettel is more magnanimous.
The German took the record from Alberto Ascari and Michael Schumcher in 2013, going to set a tally of nine in a row but Verstappen is just one victory behind him.
Should Verstappen win in his homeland, he will draw level with Vettel and be favourite to go one better in Monza the following weekend.
Whilst there is still work to be done, Verstappen has revealed that he received a text from the former Red Bull man telling him he was going to break the record.
“I think after like five wins in a row he texted me saying ‘well done with what you’re doing at the moment, keep it up and you’re going to do it’ or something like that,” he told media including PlanetF1.com. “But I would say ‘that’s nine wins in a row!’
“It’s something very impressive and I never thought I would be able to to be already on eight. If it’s possible tomorrow of course I will go for it but it’s not something I have in the back of my head constantly like ‘I need to do this, I need to do this.’
“I’m not in the sport to try and break records. I’m just here to win in the moment.”
Standing in his way is Lando Norris and George Russell who start behind him in P2 and P3. Asked by PlanetF1.com if who he is lining up against is discussed in the team’s strategy, Verstappen said they prefer to focus on themselves.
“I know that they start very well,” he said. “But I think you just think about your own strategy.
“Then of course, you go into the scenarios in case you get passed or whatever. There are a lot of things that you really take into account but maybe you focus on your own strategy because that’s what you can control.”
