Mayans MC spoilers follow.

Sons of Anarchy totted up an impressive seven seasons before it reached the end of the road back in 2014. But while its spin-off Mayans MC still has quite a way to go if it wants to reach those heights – season two wrapped up in November 2019 – it's moving in the right direction after it was renewed for another ten episodes.

The news was announced ahead of the season-two finale, and this is what Nick Grad, president of original programming at FX Entertainment, had to say (via Deadline): "We're happy to continue telling the story of Mayans MC with our partners at Fox 21 and excited that Elgin James has earned the opportunity to become the series' showrunner.

"Kurt Sutter identified and chose Elgin as his partner on the show from the outset, and Elgin has been instrumental to the success of the series, leveraging his experience and creative vision to make Mayans MC with this incredible cast, crew and creative team."

Back in October 2019, it was reported that Sutter had been fired from the show which he co-created and executive-produced alongside James after an internal investigation by Disney. It was always the plan for James to take on more of a leading role, but Sutter intended to remain on board.

Deadline said that they "don't believe Sutter had issues with James... the dust-up was with others inserted into the equation to steer the show into season three", and sources told The Hollywood Reporter that there were "multiple complaints about his behaviour on set".

Following the decision, the former Mayans showrunner sent a letter to the cast and crew explaining the situation from his perspective: "As you know, I've removed myself quite a bit this season, allowing others to take a bigger role in producing the show. It appears that philosophy has backfired. It's been reported by writers, producers, cast and crew that my absence and subsequent behaviour when there, has only created confusion, chaos, hostility and is perceived as abandonment.

"This morning I was fired by Dana Walden and John Landgraf for all the complaints levied against me... At least being fired for being an abrasive dick is on brand.

"I deeply apologise if I've made people feel less than or unsupported. My intention was literally the opposite. But clearly I’ve not been paying attention. My arrogance and chronic distraction has created wreckage."

In an in-depth interview with Deadline, Sutter explained where he believed it all fell apart.

"It all started with a joke," he said. "And not a very good one. There was a line in the season-two premiere. EZ and Coco were getting off the bus at the school where the drugs were being processed. There was supposed to be a really gnarly playground out front filled with debris, dangerous looking swings, sharp objects, rusty jungle gym, etc.

"As they exited, Coco sees EZ's distracted and says: 'Lighten up Boy Scout,' and gesturing to the playground, says, 'We're going to Disneyland.' EZ replies: 'Yeah? Guess this is where Walt buried all the Jews he had killed.' Coco comments: 'That's dark man…' And exits."

He added: "I'm not an idiot. I knew it would ring some bells...So when I was informed that the Walt Jew-killing line had to go, I agreed and changed it to…'We're going to Disneyland.' And now EZ says, 'Yeah… if Mickey and Pluto were paedophiles.'

"In hindsight, I realise that dialogue grenade was the beginning of my exit."

But controversy aside, the show will be back (so you can breathe easy), and it sounds like it's got a long future ahead after James signed a multi-year overall deal with Fox 21 Television Studios back in February this year.

"I'm honoured and excited to be able to call Fox 21 Television Studios home and to continue this journey with these incredibly protective and creative partners," he said in a statement (via IndieWire).

Here's everything you need to know about Mayans MC season 3.

Mayans MC season 3 release date: When will it air?

Season one aired in September 2018, followed by season two in September the following year. But neither of them had to contend with You Know What, which has hit the TV and movie industry exceptionally hard.

With many productions still on hold until it's safe to resume, we could be waiting quite a while for those brand new episodes.

Mayans MC season 3 cast: Who's in it?

The following big players are all returning for season three: EZ (JD Pardo), Angel (Clayton Cardenas), Emily (Sarah Bolger), Bishop (Michael Irby), Adelita (Carla Baratta), Miguel (Danny Pino), Felipe (Edward James Olmos), Taza (Raoul Trujillo), Coco (Richard Cabral), Alvarez (Emilio Rivera), Potter (Ray McKinnon), among others.

One person who won't be back is Antonio Jaramillo. His character, Riz, was murdered in hospital by Taza in season two's penultimate episode.

Chatting to Entertainment Weekly about why Taza killed Riz, Cardenas said: "I think his old club has some dirt on him and he was willing to sacrifice his own blood, literally, so that information doesn’t get out."

"I wish I was still part of [the show] because then I can contribute", Jaramillo told AfterBuzz TV, adding that he felt like he was "kept on the bench too much".

"I felt like a first-string quarterback on the bench," he added.

And Dita (Ada Maris) also won't feature given that she, too, died.

Mayans MC season 3: Can I watch it on Hulu?

For those of you in the US, Mayans MC season one is available on all versions of Hulu. But season two is only available if you have Hulu + Live TV, which is like terrestrial TV and has more than 60 live and on-demand channels.

This is because FX has exclusive streaming rights to all of its shows for 45 days after their finales have aired. After that period, the shows will only be available via Video on Demand (VOD) and boxsets, and that usually lasts for seven to nine months.

But now that Disney owns both FX and Hulu, with the former launching on the latter in March 2020, expect things to change.

Mayans MC season 3 plot: What will happen?

There's a big question mark hanging over which SAMCRO member the dead body belongs to.

Clayton Cardenas, who plays Angel, addressed that in an interview with Entertainment Weekly: "We shot that scene a few different ways: one showed who the person is that dies and one that doesn't."

Cardenas also isn't convinced that his character is a dad.

"I wouldn't put it past Potter to mess with him," he said. "However they decide to write it moving forward, there's so much room to go either way.

"You have to think about how Angel will be able to balance his life in the MC if he has a baby now? What kind of life will he be able to give to Adelita and the baby? I don't know how that all would work?

He added: I can definitely see a full season being about Angel trying to get Adelita and the baby back. Hopefully, he will have the confidence to do so with his brother next to him — and with that, hopefully the backing of the MC.
