McDonald's menu from the 80s shows how much prices have changed
An old McDonald's menu from decades ago is bound to stir some memories of what the brand was like decades ago - as well as what the prices used to be. This month marked 50 years since McDonald’s opened its first branch in the UK, in Woolwich in 1974.
But the first Liverpool McDonald's, located on Lord Street in Liverpool city centre, didn't open until November 1985. A number of best-selling menu items from its first year in the UK - McDonald's fries, Big Mac and cheeseburgers - have remained on the menu and are still loved nationwide today.
We recently found a menu from the 1980s which will remind us of how things used to be and just how much prices have changed.

We previously rediscovered a McDonald's menu from 1993, but have since found the previous decade hidden in our archive. To put things in context, the 80s was the decade we said goodbye to Blacklers department store, TV shows Brookside and Bread, set in Liverpool, first aired and families would head to their local Berni Inn for a meal out.
Obviously inflation has played a big part in the price differences from then to now - but it's still quite something to see a number of items loved decades ago still on the menu today. You can see what they looked like at the time, as well as Ronald McDonald illustrated in the top right-hand corner.
On the 80s menu, the slogan reads: "You'll enjoy the difference." At the time, you could also save money by taking orders away, with all items offering a lower price if you didn't eat in.
At the top of the menu, we see a hamburger for 43p and 37p to take away, a cheeseburger for 48p and 42p to take away and a filet-o-fish for 48p, in comparison to 42p to take away. The most expensive item on the McDonald's menu is a quarter pounder with cheese for 97p, but 84p if you took it away.
Other staple burgers on the menu include a Big Mac for 89p, or for 77p to take your order away, and a quarter pounder at 85p to stay in and 74p to take away. Among the cheapest items on the menu is the French fries, which came in two sizes.

The smaller set you back 24p staying in or 21p taking away, whereas the dearer was 39p or 34p. Kids of the 80s will no doubt remember the 1980s McDonald's milkshake seemed to take more effort to suck up through a straw - as it was branded as a triple thick shake.
Coming in three flavours - chocolate, strawberry or vanilla, milkshakes cost 46p in the 80s, or 40p if you were leaving with your order. Other staples still on the menu today include apple pie for 25p or 22pm coffee for 26p or 23p and drinks for 24p or 32p.
It is not clear which year or McDonald's branch the menu was from, but we can assume the food you could buy and the prices they cost were found in branches in Merseyside and beyond. For generations of McDonald's lovers who were around in the 80s, the prices, how the items are photographed and the style of the menu is bound to stir up some memories.
