A leading mechanic has warned over four phrases drivers use at the garage which will annoy staff and make them charge more. David Long, who is better known to fans as the Car Wizard, warned over four phrases that could annoy mechanics and cause them to charge more.

Speaking out in a warning to road users and drivers, David explained: "If you get on the phone with the mechanic and say 'I read that you need to take the radiator out, I want you to do that done in this order', the mechanic won't argue with you.

"However, in their mind, they'll say 'I can do it a lot faster but, since you want to tell me how to do my job, I'll happily charge you to take all these extra parts off'." He continued: "I've actually had people say 'can I come into the shop and watch you do the job?'.

Number one, this says right away that they don't trust me, they want to watch me do the work. The mechanic has probably done the job many times, whatever the job is, but the customer is saying 'I think this is your first time and you don't know what you're doing'."

He also warned drivers to no never ask a mechanic to 'do everything' that their vehicle needs. He advised: "Now, if you trust your mechanic and have done business with them for years or at least months, you can probably get away with doing this and they'll give you a fair estimate.

"But, if you don't know the mechanic, this is a bad, bad idea. They will call you when the vehicle is done and it could be £9,000, but you don't know what they did. Legally, there is nothing you can do because you told them to 'do it all'. Be very careful about what you want them to do."
