CBS Reality is being sanctioned for showing images of a dead child on TV at 7pm.

The show in question was Medical Detectives, a long-running factual US TV show, which looks at how forensic science has helped in solving criminal cases.

This episode in question explored the death of 4-year-old April Tucker, and how forensic science led to the murder exoneration of her parents by proving that a dog attack had caused her fatal injuries.

Ofcom received a complaint that the episode featured numerous photographs of the dead child's injuries, stating they were not suitable for broadcast at 7pm.

CBS Reality responded to the complaint, saying that the channel was not aimed at, or scheduled to appeal to, children – and said that the focus of the episode was not the child's wounds, but "the forensic detail of how the victim came to be wounded and how these wounds caused her death".

However, Ofcom found that "the programme contained unsuitable images and was inappropriately scheduled".

Ofcom's website reads: "If a broadcaster breaks the rules repeatedly, or in a way we consider to be serious, Ofcom has the legal powers to impose sanctions on them.

"Possible sanctions include a substantial fine, shortening or even taking away the channel or station's licence to broadcast."
