Meek Mill sentenced to up to 4 years in prison

Meek Mill has been sentenced to a minimum of two years in prison.

The 30-year-old rapper has been remanded in custody and will serve at least 24 months, up to 48 months, in a state prison for violating the probation from his drug and weapons case back in 2009.

Meek – whose real name is Robert Williams – was arrested twice, once for a fight at St. Louis airport, and for reckless driving in New York City, which broke the conditions of his probation.

According to local newspaper website Philly.com, Judge Genece E. Brinkley told Meek: “I gave you break after break, and you basically just thumbed your nose at this court.”

He is eligible for parole after two years.

Following the sentence, several stars have slammed the court’s decision.

Rapper Jay-Z branded Meek’s sentence “unjust and heavy handed”, and insisted he will “always stand by” the star.

Taking to Facebook, Jay wrote: “The sentence handed down by the Judge – against the recommendation of the Assistant District Attorney and Probation Officer – is unjust and heavy handed. We will always stand by and support Meek Mill, both as he attempts to right this wrongful sentence and then in returning to his musical career. (sic)”

The 47-year-old star isn’t the only celebrity to come to the Whatever You Need rapper’s defence.

Actor Kevin Hart has said he is “praying” for his close pal.
