These are the faces of four criminals who sobbed as they appeared in court. Emotions ran high as they faced up to the consequences of their actions.

A 'moment of madness' resulted in the death of a 12-year-old boy - something a sobbing driver realised he would 'never be forgiven for'. Another motorist broke down in tears as a court heard details of the crash he caused, which left five people injured.

Tears also flowed when a paedophile teacher was jailed for engaging in sexual activities with two students. A woman also wept as a court was told how she'd "failed to intervene" when a four-year-old was mauled by an XL bully in her front garden. You can read more about the individual cases below.

Shazad Alam

This speeding driver killed a "sweet, funny and intelligent" boy who was "on the cusp of his teenage years". Shazad Alam had 'aggressively' weaved in and out of traffic and used the bus lane to undercut other drivers before he mowed down Azaan Khan on the Coventry Road in Yardley on June 8 last year.

The 34-year-old, who worked for Jaguar Land Rover, had previously been banned from driving twice, in 2019 and 2022, under the 'totting up' procedure, which included incidents of speeding. Alam, of Lowesmoor Road, Sheldon, will serve two-thirds of his eight-year and nine-month sentence in custody before release on licence, from that point he would face a seven-year road ban.

Alam spent most of his sentencing hearing at Birmingham Crown Court on November 21, sobbing with his head bowed while he sobbed in the dock. Harry Lally, defending, said: "It was a moment of madness. It was stupidity. He shouldn't have driven in that manner. He knows he will never be forgiven for what he did. He will forever pray for forgiveness but it may never come."

Jay Patel

Five people were injured when Jay Patel caused a head-on crash. Patel was also left in a coma following the smash, near HMP Birmingham prison.

Patel lost control of his Vauxhall Corsa on Winson Green Road in the early hours of November 13, 2021. The vehicle ploughed into a Seat Ibiza travelling in the opposite direction.

Patel, who appeared visibly shaken and broke down in tears throughout last year's court hearing, admitted three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. At Birmingham Crown Court, he was sentenced to 29 months and banned from driving for five years and 70 days.

Rebecca Joynes

This paedophile teacher was branded 'breathtakingly arrogant' by the judge who jailed her. Rebecca Joynes engaged in sexual activities with two students while working at a school in Greater Manchester.

She took a 15-year-old boy on a shopping trip to the Trafford Centre where she bought him a £345 Gucci belt from Selfridges. She then took him back to Salford flat, where they had sex. After she was suspended from her job and arrested, it came to light she had become pregnant with a second boy, whom she met when he was 15. The relationship escalated into a sexual one, resulting in Joynes becoming pregnant and giving birth to his child.

Joynes, from Pensby Road, Wirral, denied four charges of sexual activity with a child and two charges of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust. However, she was found guilty by the jury, reports the Manchester Evening News. On July 4, she was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison and could be heard sobbing throughout the proceedings.

Stacey Smith

A young boy was savaged by an XL bully which latched its jaws around his head. The four-year-old was left with "catastrophic facial injuries" in the attack, which happened as he entered Stacey Smith's front garden.

The female dog called Nola mauled the boy's head and face after he on August 12, 2022. The boy had gone to Smith's home to see if her son was available to play with him when Nola, who belonged to Smith's partner at the time, suddenly ran through the front door and attacked, Liverpool Echo reports.

The boy's mum, who was walking behind him, started screaming and "ragging" the dog to get it off her stricken son, as neighbours also rushed to the youngster's aid. Smith, who wept during the court hearing, was arrested and interviewed by the police on the day of the attack.

The court was told Smith had no convictions and was of previous good character - but "failed to intervene" during the attack. She pleaded guilty to being a person in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury at the lower court on May 16 last year. Smith, who lives in Liverpool, was sentenced to nine months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months.
