The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has announced a change to the lockdown rules which are set to kick in from Monday onwards. He explained that as guidelines around social distancing slowly ease up, it'll be okay to meet up with six friends or family members from different households. Johnson also announced that it would be okay to meet up in private gardens.

Currently, the rules state that it's okay to meet up with one other person from a different household in a public outdoor space, such as a beach or a park, so long as a two metre distance is maintained at all times. The two metre distance rule will still apply, said the Prime Minister.

He also said during the press conference that he's aware of the "toll taken on family and friends unable to see each other" over the past eight weeks, which have also seen a rise in people wearing protective face masks.

Johnson also added that it's "still a fraction" of the social contact we're all typically used to, but that it's "unavoidable given the nature of the invisible enemy".

"We will inevitably not be getting everything right first time," he noted, before adding that the health and safety of the public is the "number one priority".

Johnson also stated: "I want to reaffirm the fundamental commitment to the British people that all the steps we have taken and will take are conditional on all the data and all the scientific advice."

There's still a long way to go before total normality resumes though. "There will be further local outbreaks," the Prime Minister added, while brushing off further questions about aide Dominic Cummings (who has been accused of breaking lockdown rules).

He said that the government will monitor the coronavirus situation constantly and will "put on the breaks as required and, where necessary, reimpose measures".

It was also recently announced that many non-essential businesses, such as clothes and phone shops, will be reopening in a matter of weeks too.
