In a world where some voices often go unheard, Radio Dusthole, a monthly show on Frome FM, is breaking the silence with good tunes, great banter, and inspiring stories.

Hosted by Mendip-based service manager James Ball, the show not only entertains but also empowers, featuring staff and clients from Julian House—a charity dedicated to helping those who have experienced homelessness rebuild their lives.

"Hosting the show really empowered the people I supported," James explains, recalling his inspiration for Radio Dusthole from his time in New Zealand. "I basically nicked the idea and brought it to the Mendips."

Airing every third Thursday of the month at 2pm., Radio Dusthole is part of Julian House’s mission to help residents develop the skills they need to move into permanent, secure housing. Its name, a nod to the Julian House supported housing unit in Shepton Mallet, symbolises a journey of transformation.

Unlike typical discussions about homelessness, the show avoids a downbeat tone. “I didn’t want it to be a show about rough sleeping where it’s all downbeat and we only play Another Day in Paradise by Phil Collins,” James jokes. Instead, the program focuses on music, lighthearted chats, and stories that highlight the resilience and humour of its guests. While clients sometimes share their experiences with rough sleeping, it's entirely their choice, ensuring a safe and supportive platform.

James is thrilled by the confidence the show builds in participants: “I’ve been so impressed by their composure on air. They’re very natural hosts who just ‘get it.’” He recalls one special moment listening back to a show with the clients: “They just loved hearing their voices coming out of the radio. Building their self-esteem is such a massive part of their journey with us.”

Radio Dusthole is just one example of Julian House’s innovative approach to empowerment. Clients engage in a range of activities, from Tai Chi and pottery classes to rock climbing and museum trips. These experiences encourage growth, social connection, and confidence.

"We’ve done all sorts over the last year—some more successful than others—but everything is worth a try," James said.
