One Northern Ireland hospital has a unique duo in its team - sisters Katie and Ella Small - who work alongside each other as staff nurses.

Katie and Ella shared a passion for nursing from a young age and were drawn to the profession through their experiences caring for their grandad, who lived with dementia. This caring experience sparked an interest in dementia care and ultimately led both sisters to pursue their careers in nursing.

They both gained valuable experience working in nursing homes and various sectors within the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust before deciding to study nursing. Katie and Ella both studied at Queen’s University, with Ella graduating just a year before Katie.

Supporting one another throughout their studies, they were determined to make a difference in dementia care.

In October 2023, Ella joined the Dementia Assessment and Treatment Unit in the Downe Hospital. Inspired by her sister’s experience and the positive impact within the unit, Katie followed in her footsteps and took up a position in the same place after becoming a registered nurse in October 2024.

Working together in the unit, the sisters find great fulfilment in caring for patients and supporting families affected by dementia.

Reflecting on their journey, Ella said: "Working alongside Katie in a field we are both passionate about is incredibly special. It feels like coming full circle from our days studying together."

Katie shared her excitement, adding: "Ella’s enthusiasm and the dedication of the team here in the Downe Hospital really inspired me. To be able to work together, knowing the care we provide makes a difference, is incredibly rewarding."

Ward Manager, Keri Gallagher, added: “Having Katie and Ella work together in the Dementia Unit in the Downe Hospital is truly special. Their family bond brings a warmth and understanding to our team and the compassion they show to our patients is just wonderful.

“We are so fortunate to have them both as part of our Downe Hospital family.”
