Yahoo News Meghan and Harry finally explain why they picked the name Archie
Baby Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor may be on the cusp of celebrating his first birthday, but his parents Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have only just revealed why they chose his name.
When it came to their firstborn, the world was left hanging for just two short days before announcing Archie's full name. And after the shock of realising Prince George had predicted what his cousin would be called months before he was born, the main focus of attention fell onto Archie's middle name - because Meghan and Harry appeared to have selected something of a pun.
Royal fans quickly noticed that Harrison, when said enough times in a row without taking a breath, very much turns into 'Harry's son'. We see what you did there, guys. And on popular baby name site Nameberry, its definition is literally described as 'Harry's son'. So that pretty much confirms it.
But this week, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex finally put us all out of our misery where their son's first name is concerned, and explained exactly why they chose Archie. It all links to the name of the couple's new charitable organisation, which has been called 'Archewell' and will be launched after the coronavirus pandemic ends.
In a statement to the Telegraph confirming the name of their new venture, the Sussexes said:
"Before SussexRoyal, came the idea of 'Arche' - the Greek word meaning 'source of action'. We connected to this concept for the charitable organisation we hoped to build one day, and it became the inspiration for our son’s name. To do something of meaning, to do something that matters."
So way before Archie was even born, when Meghan and Harry were dreaming of starting their own charity, it seems they shared a particular affinity with the greek work 'Arche', meaning 'to do something that matters'.
With parents who are vocal on lots of key issues where there's a need for change - including women's rights, mental health, disability and more - it'll be hard for Archie not to grow up with a drive to do something of purpose with his life; to make a change where it matters. His name and its significance might just be the cherry on top.
