Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are set to attend their first public engagements in weeks, Kensington Palace has announced.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will step out for a gala performance of Hamilton the musical in London's West End on August 29, following a break from the limelight.

The couple were last seen at the beginning of this month, celebrating Meghan's 37th birthday at the wedding of Prince Harry's childhood friend Charlie van Straubenzee.

Now the palace has revealed the newlyweds will attend a string of events from the end of August.

Their return to official duties comes amid continued controversy over Meghan's father Thomas Markle speaking out against the Royals following her marriage to Harry.

Mr Markle has given a series of explosive interviews ranting about the Royal Family in recent weeks.

Over the weekend he compared the Royal Family to Scientologists because of their "cult-like" secrecy, according to The Sun.

The special performance of Hamilton will raise awareness and funds for one of Harry's longtime charities, Sentebale, which he set up with friend Prince Seeiso of Lesotho.

Meghan and Harry will also attend the annual WellChild Awards at The Royal Lancaster Hotel on September 4, the Palace said.

Harry is a patron of WellChild, the national charity for seriously ill children and their families.

And the couple will attend 100 Days To Peace, a glitzy music evening on September 6 to mark the centenary of the end of World War One.

Presented by the Royal Armouries, all proceeds from the one-off concert at Central Hall will go to mental health charities Help for Heroes, Combat Stress and Heads Together.

The happy couple have taken a break from the public eye, since they were last spotted arriving at St Mary The Virgin Church in Surrey on August 4.

Their retreat came after Mr Markle was quoted at the end of July saying Meghan "would be better off if he died".

During their time away, the 74-year-old gave a further explosive interview in which he claimed he hung up on the Duke during a heated exchange following his staged paparazzi photos.

Mr Markle sparked a media storm when he staged paparazzi pictures in the run-up to Meghan and Harry's wedding, including shots of him reading about the couple online in an internet cafe.

The retired lighting director, who later pulled out of attending the wedding after suffering a heart attack, has said since that he had apologised to the pair for taking part in the photos.
