  • Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will now pay rent on Frogmore Cottage.

  • They'll also pay back the country for the home's refurbishments.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will be making a lot of changes now that they've stepped down as senior members of the royal family: They've given up their royal titles, they're most likely moving to Canada, they're no longer receiving a royal allowance, and they now have to pay rent on their Frogmore Cottage home.

As you may recall, back when Meg and Harry got married in 2018, Queen Elizabeth gifted Meghan and Harry Frogmore Cottage, which is on the royal's Windsor Estate. But don't get too jealous that Meg and Harry got a literal home as a gift—the place was reportedly "dilapidated." Which also helps explain why Meg and Harry used a cool $3 million of taxpayer money to renovate and refurbish the house, reportedly doing very extra things like using vegan paint in the nursery and constructing a custom kitchen.

So because it's a royal property, things get a little sticky now the Harry and Meghan don't want to be royals. And since they have no intention of giving up the home, Meghan and Harry have agreed to pay back the public for their pricey renovations. In a statement about the step-down agreement, the palace said, "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared their wish to repay Sovereign Grant expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their UK family home."

And not only that, but the couple will now have to pay rent on the house. Royal expert Katie Nicoll tells Vanity Fair, "They will keep the residence, a wedding gift from the Queen; however they will pay rent on the property."

No word yet on how much they're paying in rent, but considering that Prince Harry is worth $40 million, Meghan is worth around $7, and Prince Charles is still helping support them financially, I have a feeling they'll be just fine!
