Meghan Markle Speaks About Her Son Archie in Spanish to School Children in Colombia
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are on day two of a four-day tour of Colombia. And this afternoon, Meghan had the opportunity to demonstrate her proficiency in the country’s language as she spoke Spanish to school children in Bogotá.
Megan and Harry visited Colegio La Giralda, a school in the area of Santa Fe, where they were taken on a tour and met children and staff. They participated in an art session, watched the children take part in performances, and learned how students are taught to balance health and wellbeing. In a move which was reminiscent of a traditional royal tour, they also planted trees to mark their visit.
Meghan spoke Spanish to the children in a kindergarten class while she and Harry did puzzles with them, telling one student, “You’re the same age as my son Archie.” Harry was also said to have asked students their names and age in Spanish.
The Prince’s ability in the language is unknown. However, Meghan’s now deleted official biography on the royal family’s website said that she speaks Spanish, which she learned during an internship at the US Embassy in Buenos Aires. In 2020, she impressed a pastor in Los Angeles during a charity visit by speaking Spanish to one of the women involved in a project.
Harry and Meghan are in Colombia until Sunday on the four-day visit at the invitation of the country’s Vice President Francia Márquez. She revealed as they arrived that she was inspired to make contact with Meghan after seeing the couple’s Netflix program about their departure as working royals and finding Meghan's story inspiring.
Still to come on the tour is an engagement with the Colombian Invictus Games team and a visit to San Basilio de Palenque, which was founded by former slaves who escaped and is renowned as the first free town in the Americas.
As Harry and Meghan are not working royals, they have been able to select which media they want to have access to report their trip. A journalist from Harpers Bazaar is currently traveling with them as a pool reporter.
