Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, rarely puts a fashion foot wrong.

Of course, it helps that the 36-year-old wife of Prince Harry has a team of advisors and the world’s most iconic designers scrambling to dress her.

But Meghan may have made her first major sartorial misstep this weekend, stepping out in a dress that has divided opinion among fashion experts and the general public.

The look in question was a blue and white floral, velvet dress from the Oscar de la Renta’s Resort 2019 collection.

Meghan wore the gown to the wedding of Prince Harry’s cousin Celia McCorquodale and George Woodhouse, which she attended with her royal beau on Saturday.

Paired with Aquazzura heels, a Carolina Herrera Scala Insignia Clutch in White (believed to be bespoke) and a Pillbox Bow Fascinator from M&S.

Many thought the outfit “swamped” Meghan, while other mades humorous swipes at the dress’ floral pattern. The Duchess’ white fascinator also divided fans.

However, there were some people who loved the dress…

The Oscar de la Renta number is a far cry from the style Meghan normally goes for – perhaps why it generated such conversation.

Her style is usually very paired back, minimalist and elegant; florals and patterns tend to be more the Duchess of Cambridge’s vibe.

Recently, we’ve seen Meghan wearing a caped, Givenchy dress in Cheshire with the Queen, which was largely well received among critics.

Before that, Meghan donned a custom pink Carolina Herrera skirt suit and Philip Treacy hat worn to her first Trooping the Colour.

Again, it was well received by fashion heads and fans alike.

One woman who definitely got the style seal of approval was the bride herself, Celia McCorquodale.

Celia is the daughter of Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Princess Diana’s eldest sister, so she opted to wear her aunt’s famous tiara for her big day.

Donning the Spencer Tiara, the same stunning headpiece worn by Diana at her and Charles’ royal wedding in 1981, the bride gave the famous family heirloom another whirl.
