Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins have sensationally quit as presenters of the Great British Bake Off following the news that the hit show will be switching to Channel 4.

“We were very shocked and saddened to learn yesterday evening that Bake Off will be moving from its home. We made no secret of our desire for the show to remain where it was,” the much-loved pair said in a statement.

“The BBC nurtured the show from its infancy and helped give it its distinctive warmth and charm, growing it from an audience of two million to nearly 15 million at its peak.

“We’ve had the most amazing time on Bake Off, and have loved seeing it rise and rise like a pair of yeasted Latvian baps. We’re not going with the dough. We wish all the future bakers every success.

The pair have fronted the show since it first aired on BBC2 back in 2010. Sue Perkins had hinted at her distaste for the hit show’s switch to Channel 4 when she retweeted a statement calling the show a ‘quintessentially BBC programme” last night.

The BBC earlier confirmed that judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood are not contracted to stay at the show, a revelation which may now force Channel 4 to dig deep in a bid to keep them on board.
