First lady Melania Trump has hit back at an expert witness who used her son Barron's name to make a point about the US President during impeachment hearings.

Stanford Law School's Pamela Karlan was asked to compare the fears of the framers of the US Constitution to President Donald Trump 's behaviour.

She was asked by Ms Jackson Lee during the House Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday: “What comparison can we make we make between kings that the framers were afraid of and the President’s conduct today?”

Ms Karlan responded: “Kings could do no wrong because the king’s word was law and contrary to what President Trump has said Article Two does not give him the power to do anything he wants.

“I’ll just give you one example that shows you the difference between him and a king, which is the constitution says there can be no titles of nobility.

"So, while the President can name his son Barron, he can’t make him a baron.”

Mrs Trump tweeted Ms Karlan should be “ashamed” of her comments and said 13-year-old Barron “deserved to be kept out of politics”.

“A minor child deserves privacy and should be kept out of politics,” she said.

“Pamela Karlan, you should be ashamed of your very angry and obviously biased public pandering, and using a child to do it.”

Mrs Karlan later apologised for referencing Barron during the hearing.

“I want to apologise about what I said earlier about the President's son. It was wrong of me to do that," she said.

“I wish the President would apologise obviously for the things he’s done that are wrong but i do regret having said that.”
