The White House has released the first official portrait of Melania Trump, published alongside a biography of the first lady and a list of her accomplishments.

Mrs Trump, 46, a former model, adopts an assertive stands - looking the camera squarely in the eye, with her arms crossed.

The White House released no further details of the photographer or Mrs Trump's outfit.

But the picture was similar in style to Michelle Obama's 2009 portrait, which saw the former lawyer and hospital executive standing squarely to face the camera.

Her Michael Kors dress was praised by fashion experts, and its sleeveless cut, revealing toned arms, sparked an exercise fever.

By contrast, her predecessor, Laura Bush, chose a most low key pose - seated in front of a portrait of a woman and child, with a large vase of white lilies behind her.

In the biography, Mrs Trump is described as a successful model and entrepreneur, with a passion for the arts and helping women and children.

She is currently living in New York while her 10-year-old son, Barron, finishes school.

The pair are then planning on moving in to the White House.
