Melbourne Streets Deserted as Stage Four COVID-19 Lockdown Comes Into Force

Streets in Melbourne’s city centre were deserted on the morning of August 3 after the state imposed tougher restrictions on movement to battle the state’s COVID-19 outbreak.

Known as Stage Four restrictions, the new restrictions included an 8 pm to 5 am curfew, a restriction on travel for shopping or exercise outside of a five-kilometre radius from the person’s home, and a ban on weddings from Thursday, July 6.

Long lines of people were seen trying to get into supermarkets in the city on August 2 when the restrictions were announced by Premier Daniel Andrews.

There were 671 new confirmed cases of coronavirus in the state on August 1 and 123 people had died from the virus by August 2, according to state health authorities. Credit: SharyBobbins via Storyful
