Melissa Joan Hart has received widespread social media backlash after an insensitive social media post she made about Hurricane Maria.

The actress – known for her roles in Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Melissa and Joey – was due to holiday at the Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic this week.

However, her trip was postponed in the wake of Maria, which was quickly elevated to a Category 5 storm and has taken a number of lives and caused widespread damage across Dominica, Guadaloupe and Puerto Rico – and Melissa wasn't happy about it.

So much so, that she took to Instagram to dub her cancelled holiday plans were "a bummer" – apparently not considering there were a lot of people much worse off.

"And just like that, our family vacation is canceled," she said in a now-deleted Instagram post.

"Such a bummer but we plan to hit the @nickresortpuntacana resort another time this year."

Alongside the caption was a photo of an alert on her mobile phone confirming that Maria had officially made landfall on the Caribbean Island of Dominica.

And fans so weren't impressed, with one remarking that her original post was "woefully disrespectful" to those affected.

Though Hart has yet to acknowledge her oversight, she has at least attempted to make up for it with a series of posts dedicated to the true victims of Hurricane Maria.

On Wednesday (September 20), she posted several images sharing her support for countries affected such as Puerto Rico, as well as expressing her solidarity with those affected by the devastating earthquake in Mexico.

My prayers are with my friends in #Mexico after these devastating earthquakes!!
