Police are hoping to piece together forensic clues after a Mercedes ploughed into a tree following a pursuit. And cops say while the occupants of the vehicle made off - a mobile phone was dropped.

The incident had unfolded in Tamworth where officers with Staffordshire Police's road crime team had been on patrol in the town. A post on social media states: "Whilst on patrol in the Tamworth area a Mercedes failed to stop for us.

"Pursuit ended when the car went off road by the B5000 and crashed into a tree."

The cops say nobody from the car stuck around and couldn't be found. They added: "Occupants ran off and were unfortunately lost. However plenty of forensics to identify them plus a mobile phone they dropped."
