Merson identifies ‘problem’ Arsenal winger Saka will start facing ‘at some stage’
Paul Merson has warned Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka that “he will find things harder at some stage” in his career as he appears on the “radar” more and more.
The Gunners have had a brilliant season under Mikel Arteta with the Spaniard leading his side to the Premier League summit with only ten games to play.
Arsenal are currently eight points clear of second-placed Manchester City but Pep Guardiola’s side do have one game in hand.
One of the main reasons for the Gunners’ success this season is Saka with the England international contributing 12 goals and ten assists in 28 Premier League appearances.
And he also put in a man-of-the-match performance, with a goal and an assist, as England beat Ukraine 2-0 at Wembley on Sunday.
Merson is a huge fan of Saka but he does predict that the Arsenal winger will run into a few problems as his career develops with teams looking to “stop the ball getting to him”.
“The problem he will find is because of the position he plays he will find things harder at some stage,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“As he becomes more well known, teams will put him on the radar a lot more.
“Teams will look to stop the ball getting to him and they will also double up on him very quickly.
“He will have to change his game again to combat that, but he has the temperament to handle that.
“But he just loves football. All he wants is to play football and he plays the game with a smile on his face. He has all the ingredients to go as far as he wants in the game.”
Former Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton has also been waxing lyrical about Saka with the pundit convinced he’s one of the best right wingers out there.
“Try to name a better right winger in the world this season than Bukayo Saka and I think you will struggle,” Saka told the Daily Mail.
“Saka is winning the battle on the right. Mohamed Salah has not been the same footballing force for Liverpool this season. Riyad Mahrez is incredibly talented for Manchester City but I would rank Saka ahead of him.”
And Saka’s Arsenal team-mate Oleksandr Zinchenko agrees with Sutton and reckons the England international is one of the best players in the Premier League.
When asked if he was the best player around at the moment, Zinchenko replied: “In the Premier League?
“I’m not the guy who is going to judge but he is one of them for sure.
“I hope he is on this form for the rest of the season because he is such an important player for Arsenal as we have 10 more finals to go.”
