Hilary Duff has shared a first glimpse at her character Sophie in How I Met Your Mother spin-off, How I Met Your Father.

The spin-off was officially greenlit back in April with the Lizzie McGuire star in the Ted Mosby-esque lead role, who is telling her son the story of how she met his father.

The new series is set in 2021, with Sophie and her friends exploring life and love in the era of dating apps and new technology.

She captioned the Instagram photo: "Hello, I'm Sophie."

The long-awaited Hulu series has also cast Turner & Hooch star Josh Peck and American Gods star Ashley Reyes in recurring roles.

Also confirmed are Tom Ainsley (The Royals, Safe Inside), Tien Tran (Candyman, Work in Progress), Suraj Sharma (Homeland, God Friended Me, Life of Pi), Francia Raísa (Bring It On: All or Nothing, Grown-ish) and Chris Lowell (Promising Young Woman, GLOW).

Daniel Augustin (Grey's Anatomy, Dynasty) has recently been announced to replace Brandon Micheal Hall (The Mayor, God Friended Me), who had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.

Augustin will play Ian, a man who Sophie matches with on Tinder and chats to online for weeks, before finally agreeing to meet him in person.

Hilary Duff is also producing the 10-episode series. Creators of the original series Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will also be executive producing.

"As a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother I'm honoured and even a little nervous that Carter Bays and Craig Thomas would trust me with the sequel of their baby," Duff previously said in a statement (via Variety).

Co-showrunners of This Is Us and co-creators of Love, Victor, Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, are also writing and executive producing.

"Carter and Craig's iconic original series revolutionised the half-hour comedy, and we are so honoured to be carrying the torch forward for the next generation – and with Hilary Duff no less!" they said in a statement.

"We can't wait for audiences to meet Sophie and her crew, and watch them come into their own and find love in modern-day New York City.

"And we hope nobody thinks it's weird that Bob Saget will be playing old Hilary Duff's voice."

How I Met Your Father will air on Hulu in the US, while its UK broadcaster is to be confirmed.
