Heavy rain is set to batter parts of the country today with flood and weather warnings issued. The Met Office has predicted that as much as 30-40 mm of rain will fall within two to three hours later this morning.

It has issued a yellow warning in the north west of the country between 4am and 10am today (July 7), as a result. It is expected that several people may face travel nightmares getting to their Sunday locations, with spray also being kicked up in front of cars.

Patches of rain will pass across southern parts of the country. Despite the less than perfect conditions, temperatures will be in the mid teens for the majority of the nation. The highest is forecast to be in the east of the country where it will rise to around 17C.

Yesterday, heavy rain moved from south east England towards the centre of the country and east where it lingered, creating wet roads and spray. Heavier showers later impacted parts of northern and western areas, and northeast Scotland.

There also may be some flooding in homes and businesses across The Wirral, Merseyside and western parts of Greater Manchester during this morning. The Met Office warned: “A band of slow-moving heavy showers is expected to feed inland across The Wirral, Merseyside and western parts of Greater Manchester during Sunday morning. Whilst some places will only see some rain, a few places may see 30-40 mm in 2-3 hours.

“Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary. Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”

The Met Office’s forecast for today into next week reads: “Showers in the west will become more widespread through the day. Locally heavy and thundery in southern Scotland, northern England and east Wales. Sunny spells in between and light winds.

“Showers in the north on Monday, with cloud and rain across southern areas. Cloud and rain will then move northwards through Tuesday and will stay into Wednesday.”
