Met Office issues new 12-hour snow and ice warning

Forecasters have warned more snow and ice is on the way in Wales. The Met Office has issued a new yellow alert covering a 12-hour period on Wednesday morning, November 20.

Today’s warning was earlier expanded to cover parts of Powys and Ceredigion as well a much of North Wales. A similar area is covered by the latest alert, though it extends further south to include Llandovery.

Wednesday’s warning comes into effect at midnight and runs until midday. The Met Office said: “Snow showers will develop during Tuesday night and through Wednesday morning. Some lying snow is likely, with 1-2 cm in places and a risk of up to 5cm over higher ground. Ice will readily form on untreated surfaces.”

Anglesey and northwest Gwynedd, including the Llŷn Peninsula, are expected to escape the worst of the conditions. So too is the North Wales coast. Coastal areas in south Gwynedd are in the firing line, however.

Driving conditions in the affected area may again be “dangerous” the forecaster warned. Some roads and railways may be affected and there’s likely to be icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths. Slips and falls are possible, added the Met Office. Temperatures are expected to plunge today, reaching -4C by 5pm in parts of northeast Wales, such as Wrexham, Mold and Llangollen. Overnight lows of -5C are forecasted. It will be marginally warmer further west, with the mercury falling to -3C in Denbigh and Bala. Llangefni and Bangor is expected to fall to -2C, with the west Gwynedd coast perhaps dipping below zero.

In its Wales forecast, the Met Office said: “Dry and settled overnight, although becoming cold, particularly in rural parts, with a widespread frost likely. Scattered showers, wintry at times, filter into the west by the morning.

“A cold and frosty (Wednesday) morning with wintry showers in places, before turning drier and brighter later. Occasional sunny spells in the east, though remaining rather cloudy further west. Maximum temperature 8C.” Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox
