Met Office issues 17-hour North East weather warning for thunderstorms

The Met Office has issued a weather warning covering most of the North East with heavy showers and storms set to hit many parts of the country on Sunday, September 1.

A yellow warning for thunderstorms will come into force at 4am tomorrow and remain in place until 9pm, covering all of Newcastle, Gateshead, North and South Tyneside, Sunderland and County Durham as well as most of Northumberland. Forecasters have warned that there is a chance of flooding and disruption across the region when the warning is in place.

The Met Office cautions that spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures on Sunday. There is also the chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services where flooding or lightning strikes occur, with people advised to check their journeys and adjust plans accordingly.

Forecasters added that there is a slight chance of power cuts and other services to some homes and businesses being lost in the storms. Some buildings may also sustain damage from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

The Met Office explained in its latest update: "The risk of storms will steadily transfer broadly northwards through the afternoon and into the early evening. The extent of these thunderstorms is very uncertain, and many places will miss them, but where they do occur, 30 to 40mm of rain may fall in less than an hour with perhaps over 75mm in one or two places, leading to a chance of flooding and disruption."
