A new snow front is approaching the UK, prompting the Met Office to issue yet another yellow weather alert. This one starts at 12pm today (Thursday, November 21) and runs for 22 hours until 10am tomorrow.

It comes as an weekend storm has been officially named. Storm Bert is expected to impact large parts of the UK on Saturday and Sunday. Two separate Met Office yellow alerts, for wind and rain, are in place over parts of Wales.

All of North and West Wales is in the firing line. Here, snow is expected to arrive this evening and continue overnight, though this is expected to fall mostly on higher ground above 100 metres.

The Met Office yellow warning is also for ice. Sub-zero temperatures have been seen in much of Wales this week as Arctic air floods south. Ice brought chaos to some roads yesterday and last night, leading to a spate of minor accidents. It’s also been wet in places - the Met Office said Rhyl and Bangor were the wettest places in the UK on Wednesday, with 7.8mm of rain.

The new forecast from the weather agency said: “Wintry showers are expected to gradually move south this afternoon, then feeding inland from Irish Sea and North Sea coasts at times this evening and overnight, especially through the Cheshire Gap to affect parts of the Midlands and north Wales.

“Where these occur 2-5cm of fresh snow is possible, with this most likely on ground above 100m. Icy stretches are expected to form on untreated surfaces during Thursday evening and overnight into Friday morning as temperatures drop below freezing, especially following any showers.” Join the North Wales Live WhatsApp community group where you can get the latest stories delivered straight to your phone
