Met Office issues urgent 5-hour weather warning for 'dense' fog with Midlands worst hit

The Met Office has rolled out a series of new weather warnings - including in the West Midlands - as the UK is set to be shrouded in thick fog this week. The dense widespread fog warning has been issued for Monday (September 15) in 13 areas across the country.

The Met Office has warned dense fog will blanket parts of the country and has issued a yellow weather warning from 5am to 10am, chiefly issued for the Midlands region. Forecasters predict the fog will form overnight and linger well into the morning hours.

"It is looking like one of the first occasions in autumn 2024 when we will see more widespread fog developing overnight and lasting well into the morning," The Met Office has commented. The areas affected by the yellow weather warning include areas in the West Midlands, Wales and the North West.

The following 13 areas fall under the fog warning:

West Midlands

Shropshire

Staffordshire

Telford and Wrekin

North West England

Blackburn with Darwen

Cheshire East

Cheshire West and Chester

Greater Manchester

Halton

Lancashire

Merseyside

Warrington

Wales

Flintshire

Wrexham

The Met Office has issued guidance for people during the expected bad weather, including for drivers. It says: "Some of this could be quite dense, making journey times longer.

"Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, leaving extra journey time, or amending plans if necessary. Make sure you know how to switch on your fog lights, and check they are working before setting off on your journey.

"Bus and train services, as well as flights and ferry travel may also be affected; check for updates from your travel company and follow their advice. Be prepared for weather warnings to change."

Another recommendation is to keep up to date with local forecasts.
