The Orkney and Shetland Islands will also be affected by heavy rain, which is set to likely disrupt transportation and potentially cause flooding to some homes.

Heavy rain, as much as 50-80 mm in Shetland, will fall over the Northern Isles on Monday night, September 9 and through Tuesday morning, before clearing from Orkney in the afternoon and eventually from Shetland during the evening.

The alert is in place from 3am on Tuesday until 8pm at night. "Strong winds accompanying the rain may also add to the difficult travelling conditions," the Met Office added.

A weather spokesperson for the BBC commented: "Rain will become heavy at times, accompanied by strengthening winds. This is accompanied by low pressure which will bring much colder air all the way from the arctic."

The long-range forecast into next week from Friday, September 13, indicates that the forecast isn't looking much more promising - with "an increasing chance of cloud, rain and strengthening winds" in the north west across the weekend.

Looking into next week, "there are signs that high pressure may become increasingly influential on the weather across the UK, and potentially becoming rather warm in places."

However with that said, "some rain or showers are still possible" in the south and towards the furthest parts of the north west.
