Met Office map shows where in the North East is set to avoid snow amid freezing weather
People in the North East have been warned to expect snow as temperatures dip below zero.
Weather charts show that snow is set to hit the North East region on Monday evening and is set to continue overnight. A yellow weather warning is in place alerting members of the public to snow and ice heading into Tuesday morning.
A Met Office weather map has shown which areas of the North East are expected to see snowfall and at what time. But the map also shows which locations may escape snow.

At the time of writing, it showed that until around midnight on Monday, areas in County Durham, including Barnard Castle and Middleton-in-Teesdale, are likely to see snow. The rest of the region, including Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead and Northumberland, are predicted to avoid the white stuff, though some locations nearer the coast such as Ashington and Alnwick could see hail.
However, snow starts to spread after 12.15am, with Haltwhistle, Hexham, Consett, areas south of Sunderland and Ashington affected. At this stage, the map is still showing no snow in Newcastle, Gateshead, North and South Tyneside.
Newcastle starts to get snow at around 1.15am on Tuesday. The Met Office map then shows no snow, but rain, along coastal areas in Northumberland and Tyne and Wear.
In the early hours, around 2.30am, places such as Hexham, Consett and inland areas south of Forestburn Gate in Northumberland get snow. Again, the coast mostly has rain.
From 3.30am, it's mostly rain or hail for Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, North and South Tyneside and many parts of Northumberland. The map shows snow mostly in Wooler and County Durham.
The weather picture largely remains the same through the early hours, with the snow periodically pushing into Newcastle. However large parts of the coast and the city are affected by rainfall or hail.
Between 6.30am and 7.30am on Tuesday, the map shows white only in areas around Barnard Castle, Bishop Auckland, Consett, Alnwick and Wooler. At that time, there is no white band across Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead, North and South Tyneside as well as inland parts of Northumberland, and this stays almost the same until 9.45am, when snow is seen again between Sunderland and Hartlepool, as well as Wooler and Alnwick. And by 10.45am on Tuesday, the map is showing no snow in the North East, except near Wooler.
