The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for the Home Counties and parts of the midlands, cautioning the public to brace for potential disruptions from heavy rain, thunderstorms and hail.

Forecasters warn that a band of intense showers and thunderstorms is likely to sweep across the regions including Surrey from late morning into the afternoon hours. The warning is in place between 10:00am today (26 May) and 7pm today.

Some areas could see torrential downpours of 15-25mm of rain in just 1-2 hours, with an elevated risk of 30-40mm in isolated locations.

The Met Office has warned that drivers should be alert for spray, standing water on roads and reduced visibility that could lead to treacherous driving conditions and delays.

Rail passengers are also advised to check for potential delays to train services due to the unsettled weather conditions.

While heavy downpours are likely to be intense, they should also be relatively brief, the Met Office notes. However, the public is encouraged to closely monitor weather updates, as warnings could change quickly throughout the day.
