A new weather forecast from the Met Office has warned of wind gusts hitting up to 70mph in parts of the UK today (Saturday, November 16). The forecaster has shared the information on their X account, with a video of the weather predictions mapped onto the UK.

The video map shows high winds appearing in the north of the UK, using colours to show just how strong the winds are. The colours range from light pink, indicating 50-59mph gusts, up to magenta - 70-79mph.

The video also shows the direction of the wind pattern, with the weather moving south east across the country. The high winds will be focused in northeast Scotland, the Met Office says, around Shetland and Orkney.

The Met Office says: "It has been a windy start to the day in northeast Scotland, with gusts up to 70 mph in Shetland and Orkney. Winds will gradually ease in the north through the day, although remaining blustery in and around any showers."

However, it looks like the winds are going to be much more manageable in London, with gusts of up to 20mph forecast at 7pm tonight. And tomorrow (Sunday, November 17), gusts will hit highs of 23mph.

The Met Office's forecast for today says: "Generally cloudy and dry today, although some limited brighter spells may occur, especially at first. Patchy light rain may develop, ahead of a band of rain arriving late afternoon or early evening across counties to the north of London. Maximum temperature 10 °C."

Tomorrow, it's due to be less rainy, but cloud is still likely. The forecaster describes Sunday's forecast as: "Dry with varying amounts of cloud, but also sunny or clear spells. Temperatures close to, or slightly below, average. Maximum temperature 9 °C."
