Brits are facing another significant drop in temperatures as the Met Office warns that figures could plummet to minus 15C overnight on Saturday into Sunday. This comes after an icy blast saw temperatures fall to minus 18.9C on Saturday morning in Altnaharra, located in the northernmost part of the Highlands, marking the coldest January night in the country for 15 years.

Compared to the average low of around 0.3C in northern Scotland and about 1.5C to 1.6C in England at this time of year, the nation is experiencing a sharp chill. On Saturday, temperatures varied widely across the UK, with a high of 11.3C in the Isles of Scilly contrasted against a brisk minus 9.3C in Altnaharra.

Zoe Hutin, a meteorologist from the Met Office, predicts rural Scotland could see temperatures dip to around minus 15C on Saturday night, which is significantly below the seasonal average of 10C warmer. Hutin has noted, "This is probably the last very, very cold night expected, we’ve got a trend towards something a little bit milder."

In light of the frigid conditions, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has opted to extend the cold weather health warning for England until Tuesday, indicating possible increased mortality rates, particularly for people over 65 or those with pre-existing health issues. The amber alerts are now set to run through to January 14.
