Forecasters at the Met Office have warned of a "major change" in the weather this weekend, suggesting snow might hit the UK. The Devon-based forecasters have predicted an Arctic blast with the possibility of "widespread snowfall" across lower ground.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Rebekah Hicks said: “A notable early winter cold spell will arrive across the north from Sunday and will likely reach all parts of the UK by midweek.

“Temperatures will drop as a northerly airflow develops, bringing in colder Arctic air. This introduces the possibility of snow, initially over high ground in the north from Sunday, with gusty winds also a potential hazard.”

While it is difficult to forecast snowfall, a number of computer models have shown different scenarios for the weekend weather. The figures below show the likelihood of snow at the start of next week.

Rebekah continued: “There is a lot of uncertainty in what might happen after Sunday, but there are a number of scenarios which could bring some more widespread rain, along with some hill snow and stronger winds. It is possible that there may be some more widespread snowfall across lower ground, but the chance of this for any given region is low at this stage.

"What we do know is that the whole of the UK is likely to experience a spell of several days of cold, potentially disruptive weather next week. Warnings for wintry hazards, including snow and ice, are possible, so it’s important to stay up to date with the latest forecast.”

Cornwall is forecast to see low temperatures of 4° this weekend and into next week. Tomorrow (November 14) and Saturday will see patches of cloud, and temperatures will begin to drop to into single figures.

Sunday (November 17) will remain somewhat cloudy with sunny spells. The temperature will drop further, with highs of 11° and lowest possible temperature of 2°.

At the time of reporting, snowfall is not currently expected in Cornwall, but the definite cold snap may bring frost and snow to some areas. Despite the uncertainty of snow, people are being warned to be prepared for the cold weather.

Dr Siama Latif, NHS 24's associate medical director, said: "When the weather gets colder this can have an impact on everyone's health and wellbeing, but especially those who could be considered vulnerable, such as the very young, the elderly, or those with long-term health conditions.

"If you need to be out and about during a cold spell, make sure you wrap up warmly and wear shoes with good grip to try and avoid any slips, trips, or falls.
