The Met Office has warned UK households to stock up on SEVEN items ahead of Storm Eowyn. Drivers and households must gather together warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, an in-car phone charger, as well as torches, batteries and mobile phone power packs.

"Windy weather can cause delays and make travel conditions dangerous. Follow these few simple steps to prepare before journeys," the Met Office has warned. "Check bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary. If driving, check road conditions and ensure you have essentials in your car (warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, an in-car phone charger).

"People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items." The storm will begin to influence the UK’s weather early on Friday, with strengthening winds initially in southwestern parts of the UK with accompanying heavy rainfall. This will quickly spread northeast to the rest of the UK during Friday morning.

There is also a chance of snow over Northern Ireland, northern England and Scotland as the system initially bumps into cold air, however much of this will quickly change to rain as milder air moves in. Snow and rain represent additional hazards with this event, with warnings issued. The snow is likely to be relatively short-lived before it shifts to rain, but still has the potential to cause disruption, with some surface water flooding a likely hazard in some places.

A forecast for today and into Friday explains: "Frost and fog clearing, then a bright start for many. A band of wet and windy weather sweeping eastwards across most areas, followed by brighter skies with some blustery showers in the west but the late afternoon and evening.

Storm Éowyn will bring wet and very windy weather on Friday, with some disruption likely, especially across Northern Ireland, northern England and north Wales. Snow expected across Scotland also."

The weekend forecast adds: "Storm Éowyn still causing impacts through Saturday morning in the north, but brighter with some showers buy the afternoon, and winds easing. Further wet and windy weather Sunday."
