Temperatures in the North East will reach double figures this weekend as it turns milder, though most places are expected to see some rain.

Friday morning saw the arrival of milder weather conditions in the west of the UK, and these will extend east across the rest of the country by Saturday morning. Further rain across the north and west will move gradually east but hazy sunshine will hold in the east where temperatures remain nearer average in the afternoon.

Met Office chief meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said: "By Saturday, the whole of the UK is in a milder airmass. There will be a fair amount of cloud around, with further rain arriving in the west later in the day. Another changeable day is expected on Sunday whilst remaining mild. By Monday, it will turn colder again with cloud and rain clearing south followed by showers which will fall as snow to lower levels in the far north."

In Newcastle, temperatures are expected to reach 13C on Saturday and Sunday, with some showers likely on Sunday. And the picture is the same across other parts of the North East.

Looking further ahead, Tuesday will start with a widespread frost and potentially patchy fog in places. Rain will spread towards the east of the UK later in the day or overnight into Wednesday, with some snow likely in places initially, mainly over high ground in Scotland and northern England.

The Met Office adds: "Much of next week looks likely to remain unsettled, especially for northern and western parts of the UK. However, there are some signals on the horizon that the weather for the following week could once again become more settled."

According to some weather maps, several cities including Newcastle could see snow towards the middle of December. The latest data from WXCharts shows the UK being hit by snow for approximately 48 hours on December 11.

The maps indicate that snow will first strike much of Scotland around midday, with about 8cm expected to fall near Inverness within an hour, before spreading towards Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. Then, around 13cm per hour is predicted to hit northern Scotland.

However, it won't be long before the snow travels south, with cities including Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Cardiff, as well as Belfast in Northern Ireland, expected to turn white. This is anticipated to occur by midnight on December 12, during which point Scotland's snowfall will intensify even further, with up to 19cm per hour on the west coast and all major towns and cities affected.
