The Met Office has upgraded its weather warning for heavy rain across the East Midlands including Nottinghamshire as people are advised to take action to protect themselves and their property. A yellow weather warning for rain had been in place across the region for Monday (September 23), but this has now been upgraded to an amber warning.

Yellow warnings are issued when it is likely the weather will cause some low-level impacts. An amber warning means there is an "increased likelihood of impacts from severe weather, which could potentially disrupt your plans", the Met Office says.

The weather agency says: "An area of heavy rain is expected to develop across central and southern England during the early of hours of Monday, edging north and west and then becoming slow-moving somewhere across the warning area for several hours. It will then weaken and move away eastwards later Monday evening and overnight.

"Not all counties within the warning area will be equally affected, but it seems likely that some areas will see 60-80 mm and a few places may receive 100-120mm or more. This is likely to result in travel disruption and some flooding."

Lightning is also set to be an additional hazard in places and people are being urged to avoid travelling during potentially dangerous road conditions. The Met Office's forecast currently shows there will be a strong chance of heavy rain throughout Monday.

Heavy rain is also expected later today according to this hour-by-hour weather forecast for Nottinghamshire. A Met Office yellow weather warning for heavy rain Sunday remains in place, covering all of Nottinghamshire.

A list of four flood alerts across Nottinghamshire has also been issued by the Environment Agency amid a Met Office warning for heavy rain throughout the county.
