Forecasters have issued a wind warning for the South West this weekend. The Met Office said gusts of 60mph could hit the region on Sunday (September 29).

The warning, which covers Cornwall, Plymouth, west Devon and parts of Somerset, is in place from 9am until 11.59pm on Sunday. Forecasters say that strong winds will bring widespread disruption across the region.

As well as travel disruption, the strong winds could bring power cuts and the loss of other services. People have also been advised to be careful around coastal routes due to spray and large waves.

The Met Office said: "Winds will strengthen from west to east during Sunday, with gusts of 50-55 mph likely in places, especially near coasts and over/to the west of high ground, perhaps exceeding 60 mph in the most exposed areas.

"This will be accompanied by outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, which could lead to some surface water and spray. Winds will gradually ease across Wales and inland parts of southwest England through Sunday evening and night, but it may remain fairly windy along some coasts of southern and southwestern England during Sunday night."

The Met Office has outlined what to expect during the warning:

  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely

  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer

  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible

  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely

The latest warning comes after rain battered the region yesterday evening (September 26) and overnight. The Met Office had issued a yellow rain warning which came to an end at 9am this morning.
