Met Office yellow warning with Essex forecast for 24-hour battering of rain

A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued by the Met Office with experts predicting Essex could be battered with heavy rain. A warning has been issued by meteorologists at the Met Office all day on Monday (September 23).

The warning is in place from 00:00 on Monday morning and runs until 23:59 on Monday evening. The Met Office says that heavy rain could result in some disruption with communities potentially cut off by flooded roads, possible power cuts, spray and flooding leading to difficult driving conditions and delays or cancellations to some public transport services.

Areas of of heavy rain are expected to affect many parts of England and Wales during Monday. The Met Office says there is uncertainty over where will experience the heaviest downpours, but anywhere with the warning could suffer from 30-50mm of rainfall much of which could fall in six hours or less.

Some locations could see 80-100 mm over the course of 12 to 24 hours. The warning covers the entirety of Essex and stretches as far west as Taunton and as north as Middlesbrough.

A spokesperson for the Met Office, providing an outlook for Monday to Wednesday, said: "Heavy rain likely across central parts of England on Monday with brighter spells for some. Calmer on Tuesday a few showers possible. More widely wet and windy from mid-week."

The weather warning for Monday comes after a flood alert was shared for parts of Essex for Saturday afternoon. The alert covers the Essex coast from Clacton to St Peters Flat, including Jaywick, Brightlingsea, Mersea Island, Heybridge, Maldon and the Colne and Blackwater estuaries.
