Met Police officer charged over fatal 999 collision in Enfield which killed moped rider

A serving Met Police officer will appear in court accused of causing death by dangerous driving after a fatal collision in Enfield, north London, last year.

PC Ian Brotherton, 32, will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday over a collision between a marked police van and a moped rider on Southbury Road on October 12 last year.

The moped rider, 26-year-old Brazilian national Cristopher De Carvalho Guedes, died in hospital a day later.

The police vehicle had its lights and sirens on as it was on the way to a 999 call.

PC Brotherton is accused of causing death by dangerous driving, and causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving.

The charge comes after a probe by the police watchdog, the IOPC, which began investigating after a mandatory referral from Scotland Yard.

Charges were authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service after the conclusion of the IOPC investigation in April 2024.
